Prompt, Workflow, or Skill? Choose a Reusable Format for Your AI Task

The useful prompt is buried in a chat, the next operator repeats the old mistakes, and nobody knows which tools it assumes. Package the procedure at the level the task needs. A one-off request, a reviewed sequence, and an executable environment are different things to hand over.

Use a prompt for a bounded instruction, a workflow for inputs, stages, checks, and handoff, and a Skill package when a compatible host can load the instructions and supporting resources. Keep account permissions and external actions in the host's enforced controls.

In this guide
  1. Choose the smallest format that preserves the useful process
  2. What could the same task look like as a Skill package?
  3. Build from a completed, reviewed example
  4. Use a portable procedure brief before host-specific packaging
  5. A useful quote-review kit can remain readable Markdown
  6. Keep the tests with the instructions

Choose the smallest format that preserves the useful process

A larger package does not automatically make the model better. Choose based on what another operator needs to reproduce the reviewed task, and keep the format understandable without requiring them to reverse-engineer a previous conversation.

A practical format choice
NeedStarting formatWhat to include
One bounded drafting or review taskPrompt plus source packTask, inputs, output, conditions, checks
Repeated work with stages and exceptionsWorkflow instructionsInputs, sequence, failure route, reviewer, handoff
Reusable instructions in a compatible agent hostSkill directoryHost-compatible metadata, instructions, examples, references, dependencies

What could the same task look like as a Skill package?

This is a proposed directory layout, not a universal Skill format. Match the instructions and any metadata to the host that will load it. Start with a plain prompt for one request; add files and scripts only when the task needs them. Permissions for sending messages, spending money, or changing accounts still belong to the execution host.

examples/quotes.mdExpected interpretationCurrency and minimum-order example with freight pending
scripts/check-fields.pyOptional deterministic checkValidate required columns; no purchasing action

Build from a completed, reviewed example

  1. Save one task's permitted inputs, reviewed output, corrections, and open questions.
  2. Extract the steps and decisions that made the result usable, including failure handling.
  3. State environment requirements: applications, local dependencies, accounts, permissions, and user-funded services.
  4. Choose the intended host and check its current loading and execution documentation before packaging a Skill.
  5. Test the procedure on a different example and revise assumptions that depended on the first case.
  6. Version the instructions and keep examples, acceptance criteria, and compatibility notes with them.

Use a portable procedure brief before host-specific packaging

Reusable structure
NAME AND PURPOSE: [one recurring job]
WHEN TO USE: [inputs and reader decision]
REQUIRED ENVIRONMENT: [software, accounts, dependencies]
INPUT CONTRACT: [files, fields, source permissions]
PROCEDURE: [stages and decisions]
ACCEPTANCE CHECKS: [evidence and expected properties]
EXCEPTIONS: [missing, conflicting, failed, uncertain]
HANDOFF AND APPROVAL: [reviewer and external-action boundary]
EXAMPLES AND VERSION: [references]

Adapt this brief to the chosen host's current Skill specification. Inspect bundled scripts and keep credentials outside the package.

A useful quote-review kit can remain readable Markdown

In an authored practice handoff, the team repeats supplier quote reviews. The reusable assets are a buying brief, source documents, field checks, unresolved-term examples, and a reviewer decision. They can be useful as ordinary files before any agent host is involved.

If a compatible host is later chosen, those resources can support a Skill that explains when to use the procedure and how to locate them. The package still needs the user's document-processing environment and approval of any supplier message. Packaging does not create those capabilities by itself.

Keep the tests with the instructions

A reusable package should show the next operator both a normal case and a case that must stop for clarification. Recheck it when the host, model, dependencies, or output requirements change rather than assuming an old successful run still applies.
